Roundhouse and shop.

The 491 sits of the turntable in front of the Alamosa roundhouse and shops. This is the best picture I got showing the relationship of the roundhouse, turntable, and the backshop. Unlike more modern Class One railroad steam backshops, the Alamosa shops did not have an overhead crane or a drop pit. The two story structure on "stilts" in this picture housed a lifting mechanism that could lift engines off their drivers, or if necessary seperate the boilers from the frames. Once off their wheels boilers and frames were moved into the shop on shop trucks via a transfer table.
