Disaster at Durango.

May 1968. Gordon Chappell and I had chased the first train of the 1968 "season" from Alamosa, and when I saw this scene in Durango I couldn't get out of town fast enough. The water tank had been gone for awhile, but the loss of the coaling tower and mayhem caused by the new loop were pretty depressing. Durango had been a classic terminal, worthy of preservation. And the railroad was not the culprit, the Colorado Highway Department wanted the land for a highway relocation.
